The Show

As the lights dim, a few traditional music notes introduce one of the most famous horror legends in China: Painted Skin. Dating back to the 17th century, this legend tells the story of Wang, an educated man, who brings a young woman to his home, pretending to be a poor victim. He inevitably falls under her spell. This is the beginning of a tragedy, as Wang fails to listen to the signs and learns the hard way about judging people on appearances.

Next comes one of the country's four most popular love stories: the legend of Chinese Valentine's Day. In the West, Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14. In China, this celebration, known as the Qixi Festival, takes place on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month. Like the Chinese New Year, the date fluctuates, generally in August. Its roots lie above all in a legend as poetic as it is romantic: the story of an impossible love between a farmer and a goddess. The couple are separated by a family member who disapproves of their love. But something happens once a year, on the 7th night of the 7th month.

Love and Temptation is also a unique opportunity to discover three traditional arts:

Pingshu, the Chinese art of storytelling; Guzheng, a musical instrument dating back over 2,500 years; and Beijing opera, the traditional Chinese elite art form combining singing, dancing, lyrics, martial arts and acrobatics.

COUP DE POUCE PRIZE

Each year, the Vue sur la Relève Festival joins forces with forty partners from the performing arts community. These industry professionals offer their support to the artists in the program of their choice, providing them with “Coups de Pouce” in the form of showcases, bursaries, show airings, participation in the Bourse RIDEAU, studio recordings, residencies, etc. These agreements enable artists to integrate into their local communities and to develop their careers. These agreements allow artists to incorporate into their milieu and launch their careers.

Aurore Liang and her team of Trésors de Chine artists are proud to have received one of the Coup de Pouce awards in May 2023.
