From Conformity to Creativity: My Journey of Integration in Quebec
Ever since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated by Chinese opera and storytelling. Yet I did everything I could to stifle that dream. To please others and put them at ease, I followed the path laid out for me: I was the model student, earned a string of degrees in business, and sought a stable job.
When I immigrated to Quebec in 2007, the call of the stage reawakened. But taking the stage, in French, in the precarious world of the arts, when I had a secure background in administration? It was terrifying. Pure madness. I fought against myself not to do it.
Yet it was here, in Quebec, that I finally found the courage to break free from my own chains. Today, as a producer, director, and performer, I’m pursuing an artistic project that I would never have dared to imagine in my home country. Immigration turns everything upside down; it’s scary, but it also offers us this precious gift: the freedom to become ourselves.
