The Monkey King: A Discovery Worth Making?

The Monkey King is the great hero of Journey to the West, one of Chinese literature's four most famous masterpieces. In Asia, one in four people - one billion people - are familiar with this renowned legend. Today, the rest of the world is invited to discover this emblematic story through the living arts. This captivating show takes us into the birth of a mythical monkey born from a rock, his quest for immortality, and above all, his battles with celestial generals.

Director Robert Reid harmoniously blends ancestral practices dating back over two thousand years, such as the Pingshu tale, Guzheng music, shadow theatre and Beijing opera (a UNESCO world heritage site), with Western theatre. This piece brings together Western and Chinese arts, uniting modernity and tradition.
