Beijing Opera Workshop, Discovery of a UNESCO Art

Description

Duration : 45 – 60 min (with the possibility of a series with an outing to a performance)

Target group : kindergarten - university

Facilitators : Aurore Liang and Michelle Jiang

Beijing opera is China's most popular traditional theatre and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It consists of songs, dances, spoken words, acrobatics, and martial arts. In this workshop, not only can students enjoy artistic performances, but above all, they can acquire general knowledge and basic techniques for this ancestral art.

This workshop aims to :

- Discover a Chinese theatrical form
- Acquire basic knowledge of the art
- Perform specific vocalizations
- Experiment with basic movements

Examples of activities

Presentation Of The History And Main Characteristics Of Beijing Opera

This presentation enables participants to acquire a basic knowledge of this art form and develop their ability to appreciate it.

Two Beijing Opera Performances

In costume, the two performers allow the audience to experience two different styles of Beijing opera up close.

Vocal Exercises: Vocal Warm-Up

Participants learn to warm up their voices, starting with the animal voice and then using the Peking opera method.

Dance Exercises: Learning Basic Gestures And Stage Behaviour

The artists introduce participants to the various movements required for male and female roles
inspired by traditional Chinese dance.

Presentation To The Public

Participants may also have the opportunity to make a presentation to the class.
