20 Dec The Monkey King: A Successful Premiere At Les Grands Ballets Canadiens
On November 23, 2024, we were honoured to present the premiere of The Monkey King at Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. This event, organized by the Consulate General of China in Montreal, offered an excellent opportunity to celebrate cultural exchanges between East and West in a warm and enriching atmosphere.
Before this stage premiere, the show was previewed at La Porte Rouge on two evenings, quickly selling out. These performances were well received by audiences, who showed keen interest in both children and adults, thanks to the captivating story and original staging. Inspired by one of China's major literary masterpieces, The Monkey King was presented in French, under the artistic direction of Quebec director Robert Reid. The project built a bridge between Chinese and Quebecois traditions, creating a respectful dialogue between tradition and modernity.
The evening was also enriched by immersive pre-show activities, offering a deeper, more interactive experience that was warmly appreciated by the audience. This approach made it possible to reach a wide range of audiences and enhance the appeal of this production.
This production would not have been possible without the generous grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.
Encouraged by this positive feedback, we look forward to continuing to share The Monkey King with an even wider audience. The team is also looking forward to continuing this creative adventure with the preparation of The Monkey King 2, a new chapter we can't wait to share with you.
