Aurore Liang and the treasures of China

Aurore Tianzhi Liang, originally from Beijing, arrived in Quebec in 2007 and chose to settle here permanently. She uses the art of storytelling to connect her native culture with her host community. She has told her stories in places such as the Jardin de Chine at the Montréal Botanical Garden, and regularly visits schools.

For several years now, she has also been promoting Beijing opera, a traditional Chinese art form combining music, acrobatic dance, theatre and song. This art form, listed by UNESCO as part of humanity's intangible cultural heritage, tells stories drawn from Chinese folklore and history.

Aurore is a spontaneous and bubbly artist, but also a rigorous one. Her love of storytelling goes back to her childhood, when she was introduced to it by her mother, a passion that led her to take to the stage at the age of six to tell Thumbelina. For her, storytelling and performance are powerful ways of preserving and transmitting her culture.
